How to keep your carpets looking and smelling fresh

Uncategorized By bonnix

Carpets can be an expensive investment and you don’t want to spend all that money on new carpets just for them to look drab and smell like mildew after just a few months. So to retain their freshness for years and years to come you’re going to have to make a conscious effort to care for your carpets.

Below are four tips to help you achieve this:

1.BAN SHOES:

Getting family members & visitors to remove their shoes at the front door is one of the best things to do to care for your carpets. This will stop dirt and mess being carried into your home and soiling your carpets.

2. VACUUM REGULARY:

To keep your carpets looking clean at all times it’s essential that you vacuum them at least two to three times a week. This will not only pick up dirt, but it will ensure that the dirt isn’t trodden deep into your carpets and will lift the pile of your carpet, but it is also important that you use the correct vacuum for your specific carpet.

3. SPOT CLEANING:

If a spillage happens on your carpet it is important that you deal with it immediately by dabbing the spillage with white kitchen roll and follow our guide to remove a red wine spillage.

4. PROFESSIONAL CARPET CLEANING:

It is important to have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year but this depends on how much use your carpet gets in that time. Carpets act as a filter holding dust mites, food particles, human dead skin cells etc and by having them  cleaned this will eradicate these problems, deodorises the carpets and revitalises the carpet pile.

Important Points To Consider When Buying A New Carpet

Uncategorized By bonnix

When you are planning to buy a new carpet there are a few important things to consider before doing so. Firstly you need to know what area in your house the carpet for as this will determine the quality you choose and possibly the colour.

If is for a bedroom then you can look at a carpet that is softer and more luxurious than an area where higher footfall will occur like hallways or stairs so you’ll need a denser more resilient pile.

Some carpets have different pile weights which means you can use the same colour throughout your property but using different weights in different areas. This is ideal if your property is small and using one colour gives a visual of space.

Choose a good quality 8-10mm thick underlay if you choose a secondary back carpet this will add to softness underfoot.

Most companies offer a free professional measuring planning and estimating service which is useful for those awkward shape areas and also bring samples to offer up against your decoration.

Finally ask your supplier if the carpet fitter they will be sending is a member of the NICF (National Institute of Carpet & Floorlayers). This is the flooring trades governing body and if the fitter is an approved member it means they have taken an exam into the installation of floor covering textiles to a specific British Standard code of practice.

Spilling red wine on a carpet, especially a light coloured carpet, is every ones nightmare but with prompt action and simple liquids and tools you find in any home help is at hand.

  1. Red wine spillage occurs.
  2. Dilute immediately with white wine, allow to soak into the red wine a few seconds.
  3. Dab, don’t rub, with lots of white kitchen roll to absorb the liquid, you should see red start to appear on the kitchen roll.
  4. Wet the area with warm soapy water, washing up liquid is good for this.
  5. Absorb the wet area with more kitchen roll until nearly dry.
  6. Now wet the same area with clean cold water then absorb with kitchen roll. At this point it is helpful to stand on the kitchen roll to put pressure on to absorb the liquids out of the fibres.
  7. Once you cannot get any more wetness out of the carpet lightly fluff up the fibres with your hand and leave to dry and vacuum the following day.

At no point during this process should you rub the carpet as it will spread the stain. causing a bigger problem. Dabbing the liquid with kitchen roll will remove the stain from the carpet fibres.
